The most romantic restaurants in London share three things: low light, tables you can actually talk across, and service that knows when to disappear. Clos Maggiore in Covent Garden, Andrew Edmunds in Soho and Scott’s in Mayfair are three of the best-loved, and below are twelve date night restaurants in London in all, grouped by area so you can match dinner to the rest of your evening.
Every restaurant here was open at the time of writing in 2026, and most have been part of London life for decades, one of them for more than two centuries. Menus, prices and opening times change, so check with the restaurant before you book, and mention the occasion when you do.
What makes the best romantic restaurants in London?
It isn’t the price. Some of the most expensive dining rooms in London are too bright, too loud or too formal to be romantic, while a small candlelit room with a handwritten menu can be perfect. Look for soft lighting, a sensible noise level, tables that aren’t jammed together and a kitchen that doesn’t rush you. A corner table or a booth makes a real difference. For a first date, a calmer room is kinder; a buzzy, glamorous one is better once the conversation is already flowing.
Romantic restaurants in Mayfair
Scott’s
On Mount Street, Scott’s is one of Mayfair’s great institutions: oysters, Dover sole and other classic British fish and shellfish, a champagne list with real depth and a room full of quiet glamour. It suits an anniversary or any evening where you want the setting to feel like an occasion without the stiffness of a tasting menu.
La Petite Maison
Tucked away on Brook’s Mews since 2007, La Petite Maison brings the food of Nice to Mayfair: dishes for sharing, white tablecloths and the famous tomato and lemon centrepieces. The room has recently been refreshed and keeps its sunny Riviera mood. It’s lively rather than hushed, so it’s best for a date that’s already going well.
Sketch: The Gallery
On Conduit Street, Sketch is a converted eighteenth-century building with several very different rooms. The Gallery serves afternoon tea by day and dinner in the evening, in an interior built around a changing artist’s installation. It’s theatrical and memorable, and a natural talking point. Upstairs, the Lecture Room and Library holds three Michelin stars.

Kensington and Chelsea
Clarke’s
Sally Clarke opened her restaurant on Kensington Church Street in 1984, and it remains one of the most quietly civilised places to eat in west London. The menu changes daily with the seasons, the room is calm and grown-up, and the service is warm without fuss. It’s ideal for a long, talkative dinner, a short walk from High Street Kensington and Notting Hill Gate.
Daphne’s
Founded in 1964 by Daphne Rye, the casting director who discovered Richard Burton, Daphne’s on Draycott Avenue has been serving Italian food to Chelsea for more than sixty years. It feels like a smart local rather than a scene: seasonal cooking, a relaxed room and the sort of place you can stay late. It sits between Chelsea and South Kensington, within easy reach of Sloane Square.
Marylebone
Trishna
In the heart of Marylebone village, Trishna serves the coastal cooking of south-west India and has held a Michelin star since 2012, which it kept in the 2026 guide. The room is small and relaxed, the spicing bright and confident, and the wine list unusually thoughtful for an Indian restaurant. A very good choice if you’d like something special without ceremony, and easier to book than most starred restaurants.
Fischer’s
On Marylebone High Street, Fischer’s is a Viennese café of marble-topped tables and polished wood panelling, run by the group behind The Wolseley. Schnitzel, strudel and coffee in a warm, old-world room make it a gentle setting for a first date or a weekend brunch that runs long. Our Marylebone page shows the ladies based nearby.
Soho
Andrew Edmunds
At 46 Lexington Street, in an eighteenth-century townhouse, Andrew Edmunds has been a byword for romantic dining since the 1980s. Candlelight, a short menu rewritten every day and one of the most generously priced wine lists in London. The tables are small and close together, so it’s intimate in every sense. Book well ahead.
Bob Bob Ricard
Just off Regent Street, Bob Bob Ricard is all booths, brass and glamour, with a “Press for Champagne” button at every table. British and French classics, a long drinks list and a sense of occasion from the moment you sit down. Good for a celebration, and for anyone who likes a little theatre with dinner.
Covent Garden
Clos Maggiore
On King Street, Clos Maggiore is the name that comes up first whenever Londoners talk about romantic restaurants. The conservatory at the back, with its canopy of blossom, fairy lights and a glass roof that slides open on warm evenings, is the table everyone wants. The cooking is classical French and the wine cellar is enormous. Ask for the conservatory when you book, and book early.
Rules
Opened as an oyster bar by Thomas Rule in 1798, Rules on Maiden Lane claims the title of London’s oldest restaurant. Game, pies and puddings in rooms full of history make it a perfect choice before or after the theatre, and a lovely one for anyone visiting London who wants to feel the city’s history at the table.
Westminster
The Cinnamon Club
Set in the Grade II listed Old Westminster Library, with books still lining the walls, The Cinnamon Club serves modern Indian cooking built on British ingredients. It celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2026. The grand room is spacious enough for a private conversation, which is rarer in London than it should be.
Date night restaurants in London: how to get the best table
- Book early for weekends. A week or two ahead is sensible for a Friday or Saturday at any of these; longer for Clos Maggiore’s conservatory or Andrew Edmunds.
- Mention the occasion. Restaurants can’t guarantee a particular table, but they’ll often do their best for an anniversary or a birthday.
- Ask for quiet. A corner, a booth or a table away from the kitchen door is a reasonable request.
- Read the small print. Many popular London restaurants now take card details or a deposit to hold a booking, with a cancellation window.
- Think about timing. An 8pm table on a Saturday is the busiest of the week. A slightly later sitting is often calmer and less hurried.

A dinner date with an escort
If you’re in London on your own, a romantic restaurant needn’t mean a table for one. A dinner date with one of our ladies is a three-hour booking, usually around £800: dinner first, then the rest of the evening privately. Choose and book the restaurant, tell us the time and the dress code, and she’ll arrive dressed for the room. Our guide to dinner dates and overnights covers the details, and escort etiquette covers the courtesies. Browse our London escorts to find someone who suits the evening, then get in touch a day or two ahead.
Good to know
Questions
Clos Maggiore in Covent Garden is the one most often named, thanks to its blossom-filled conservatory with a sliding glass roof. Andrew Edmunds in Soho and Scott's in Mayfair are close contenders in very different styles.
For a Friday or Saturday, a week or two ahead is sensible. The most sought-after tables, such as the conservatory at Clos Maggiore, can need longer, so book as soon as you know the date.
Smart casual is right for most of the restaurants in this guide. If you're unsure, check the restaurant's website or ask when you book; it's better to be a little overdressed than underdressed.
Rules on Maiden Lane and Clos Maggiore on King Street are both a few minutes' walk from the West End's theatres. Booking for after the show is often more relaxed than eating beforehand.
You can ask, and most restaurants will try, especially if you mention a birthday or anniversary. They usually can't guarantee it, so ask early and politely.
