The best date night ideas in London pair one memorable thing with an easy dinner close by: a rooftop at sunset followed by a candlelit table, a jazz set in Soho and then cocktails behind an unmarked door, or a night at the ballet ending with a late supper in Covent Garden. Pick the mood first and build the evening around it. Below are fourteen romantic things to do in London, grouped by mood and chosen by our concierge for how well they work as an evening, not as a sightseeing list.

We’ve kept to long-established places that are open in 2026. Opening times, prices and seasons do change, so check with each venue before you go, and book anything that matters to you.

Date night ideas in London: how to plan the evening

London rewards a little planning and punishes a lot of travel. The most common mistake is an evening spread across three postcodes, with half of it spent in the back of a taxi. Keep everything within a short walk or one short ride: a show in the West End with supper in Covent Garden, say, or a walk in Hyde Park followed by dinner in Kensington. Book the restaurant first, since a good table is usually the hardest thing to find, then fit everything else around it. And have a plan for rain. In London it is less a risk than a certainty.

Classic and glamorous: romantic things to do in London

1. Dinner somewhere candlelit

Still the backbone of a good date. A room with soft light, well-spaced tables and staff who know when to leave you alone does more for an evening than any amount of theatre on the plate. Our guide to romantic restaurants in London picks twelve, area by area, from a Soho townhouse to a Mayfair institution.

2. A night at the ballet or the opera

The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, home of Royal Ballet and Opera, is about as romantic as a night out in London gets: red velvet, gilt and a glass of champagne at the interval. The season runs from autumn into the following summer, with seats across a very wide range of prices. Dress up a little, as that’s part of the pleasure, and book a table nearby for after the curtain.

3. A West End show and a late supper

Theatreland is compact enough to walk from your seat to your table. Choose the show for the person you’re taking rather than for the reviews, and book dinner for afterwards, so nobody spends the first act watching the clock. Rules on Maiden Lane, which has been serving since 1798 and calls itself London’s oldest restaurant, is a classic choice a few minutes away.

4. Afternoon tea in a grand hotel

For a daytime date, a proper afternoon tea is hard to beat, and it suits a first meeting especially well: elegant, unhurried and easy to talk over. Several hotels serve it into the early evening, so it can run straight into drinks. Our guide to afternoon tea in London compares the grand classics with the more playful modern versions.

5. A tasting menu for a big occasion

For a birthday or an anniversary, a long tasting menu gives the evening its own shape: three hours or so, a procession of small courses and no decisions to make. London has six three-star restaurants in the 2026 Michelin Guide, and our selection of Michelin star restaurants in London explains how to book them and what to expect.

Views and fresh air

6. Sunset from a rooftop bar

Time it for the last hour of daylight and London does the rest. The South Bank, the City and the West End all have rooftops with long views over the river, the domes and the towers. Our guide to rooftop bars in London lists the best for sunset, and the ones with heaters and cover for cooler evenings.

7. The Sky Garden

At the top of 20 Fenchurch Street in the City, the Sky Garden is a glass-domed garden with bars, two restaurants and views in every direction. Entry is free but has to be booked in advance; a reservation at one of its bars or restaurants also gets you in. Because it’s enclosed, it’s one of the few great London views that works in any weather.

8. The river by boat

The Uber Boat by Thames Clippers river bus runs between piers from Putney in the west to Woolwich in the east. A ride downriver at dusk, past Parliament, St Paul’s and Tower Bridge, costs a fraction of a cruise and feels just as special. Sit outside at the back if the weather allows, then step off at Bankside or London Bridge for dinner.

9. A rowing boat on the Serpentine

The boathouse on the Serpentine in Hyde Park hires rowing boats and pedalos, daily through the warmer months and with later closing in high summer. Row for half an hour, then walk across the park to dinner in Kensington, Knightsbridge or Bayswater. It’s simple and a little old-fashioned, which is exactly its charm.

10. A canal walk from Little Venice

Just north of Paddington, Little Venice is where the Regent’s Canal begins, lined with narrowboats and willows. Walk the towpath east towards Regent’s Park as the light fades, then double back to a table in Marylebone. If you’d rather have a view, Primrose Hill, on the far side of Regent’s Park, offers one of the best free skyline panoramas in the city.

After dark: things to do in London for couples who like a late night

11. Live jazz in Soho

Ronnie Scott’s on Frith Street has been London’s best-known jazz club for generations, and the refurbished Upstairs at Ronnie’s, which opened in 2026, adds a smaller room for later sets. A few streets away, the basement jazz club beneath PizzaExpress on Dean Street has been presenting live music since the 1970s. Book a table rather than taking your chances at the door. Our guide to speakeasy and jazz bars in London has more.

12. A hidden bar

Few things start a conversation like a door that doesn’t look like a door. London’s hidden bars range from a 1920s detective agency in Earl’s Court to a wartime Underground carriage just off Carnaby Street. Go early in the week if you can, when the rooms are calmer and the bartenders have time to talk.

13. A late night at the V&A

On the last Friday of most months, the V&A in South Kensington stays open late for Friday Late, with performances, DJs, talks and bars among the galleries. It’s free and drop-in, which makes it a good first-date idea: plenty to talk about, and an easy walk to dinner afterwards.

Cosy and low-key

14. The Electric Cinema in Notting Hill

The Electric on Portobello Road is the most comfortable cinema in London for a date, with leather armchairs and footstools, sofas for two at the back and a handful of beds in the front row. Book early if you want a sofa. Add dinner in Notting Hill beforehand and a nightcap afterwards, and the evening more or less plans itself.

And in winter: skating at Somerset House

From mid-November to early January, an ice rink fills the courtyard of Somerset House on the Strand, with evening sessions and late-night DJs. Book an evening slot, when the building is lit. It’s a seasonal fixture, so check this year’s dates before you plan around it.

Planning a dinner date with an escort

Not every date night involves a partner. Some of our clients are in London alone, for work or a few days away, and would simply rather not dine alone. For them we arrange dinner dates: a three-hour booking with one of our ladies, usually around £800, which begins with dinner and continues privately afterwards. Our guide to dinner dates and overnights explains how they work.

The planning is the same as for any date night. Book the restaurant first, tell us where and when, and she’ll dress for the setting. Restaurants in Mayfair and Marylebone are convenient for many of our ladies, as are those around Kensington and Bayswater. A dinner date is best arranged a day or two ahead. Rates are for time and escortship, and good manners at the table count for as much as anywhere; our notes on escort etiquette cover the basics. To see who might suit the evening, browse our London escorts, then contact us by phone or WhatsApp.

A concierge’s checklist for date night

  • Book the table first, then everything else.
  • Keep the evening within one or two neighbouring areas.
  • Have an indoor alternative for anything planned outdoors.
  • Check dress codes, especially at grand hotels and the opera.
  • Confirm opening times and seasonal dates with each venue before you go.
  • Leave room for one unplanned drink. The best part of an evening is often the bit you didn’t book.

If it’s a first meeting, our first date tips are worth five minutes before you set out.

Questions

Entry to the Sky Garden is free if you book ahead, the V&A's Friday Late is free and drop-in, and a river bus at dusk costs far less than a cruise. A canal walk from Little Venice or sunset on Primrose Hill costs nothing at all.

A night at the ballet in Covent Garden, skating at Somerset House between November and early January, or a film on a sofa at the Electric Cinema in Notting Hill. Afternoon tea in a grand hotel is a lovely way to spend a dark afternoon.

Something with a natural end point and plenty to talk about, such as afternoon tea, a late opening at a museum or a drink in a quiet cocktail bar. Keep it close to somewhere you could have dinner if it goes well.

For a popular restaurant on a Friday or Saturday, a week or two is sensible. Michelin-starred restaurants, the best seats at the ballet and the sofas at the Electric Cinema can go much earlier, so book as soon as you know the date.

Yes. A dinner date with one of our ladies is a three-hour booking, usually around £800, starting with dinner and continuing privately afterwards. It's best arranged a day or two ahead by phone or WhatsApp.
