The best things to do in London at night are a late dinner in Soho or Covent Garden, a West End show, live jazz at Ronnie Scott’s, the city lights from the Sky Garden or the Shard, a late opening at the V&A and, if you still have the energy, a club. Plan the evening around one fixed booking, usually dinner or a show, and let the rest follow.
Here is how our concierge would put together a London night, with the places that have earned their reputations.
Late night restaurants London still does well
London’s kitchens close earlier than visitors expect, so a late table is worth booking. A few places are built for it. Duck & Waffle, high up in Heron Tower at 110 Bishopsgate, has long been famous for its late hours and its view over the City. The Wolseley on Piccadilly, a grand café in a former car showroom, is a classic for a late supper after the theatre. In Covent Garden, Hawksmoor Seven Dials serves steaks and cocktails in a vast, low-lit former brewery.
And when everywhere else has closed, Soho has Bar Italia at 22 Frith Street, run by the same family since 1949 and famous for staying open into the small hours. It’s an espresso and a pastry rather than dinner, but at two in the morning that is often exactly right.

Soho nightlife
Soho nightlife is concentrated in a few streets, which makes it easy to wander. Ronnie Scott’s on Frith Street is London’s most famous jazz club and still books world-class players; its refurbished upstairs room reopened in 2026 as a smaller venue in its own right. Across the road, Bar Italia catches the crowd afterwards. Soho Theatre on Dean Street is the place for comedy and new writing, and members of the Groucho Club are a few doors down.
Just south, The Comedy Store on Oxendon Street, off Piccadilly Circus, has been a London institution since 1979. And between them all are dozens of bars, from old pubs to discreet cocktail rooms; our guide to speakeasy bars in London picks out the best hidden ones.
Shows: theatre, opera and comedy
The West End is the obvious centrepiece of a night out, and it rewards a little planning. Book the best seats early for the big musicals; for plays, midweek performances are easier to get. The Royal Opera House in Covent Garden runs a full season of opera and ballet, and its 2026 to 2027 season includes new productions of Wagner’s Parsifal and Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera.
Dine before the show rather than after, unless you’ve booked one of the late places above: many restaurants offer an early pre-theatre menu, and you won’t be watching the clock through the second act.
London at night from above
Some of the best views in London are free. The Sky Garden, at the top of 20 Fenchurch Street, is a three-storey glasshouse with terraces over the City. Entry costs nothing, but you must book a timed ticket in advance; they go quickly, and booking a table at one of its bars or restaurants is the other way in. The View from The Shard is ticketed and higher still, and at dusk you can watch the city switch itself on.
At street level, walk across Waterloo Bridge after dark for the classic view of St Paul’s in one direction and Westminster in the other, then along the South Bank. For a drink with a view, see our guide to rooftop bars in London.
More things to do in London at night: museum lates
Museums after hours are one of London’s best-kept secrets. The V&A in South Kensington runs Friday Late on the last Friday of most months: free, drop-in, with performances, talks and DJs among the galleries. The Natural History Museum, a short walk away, holds its own Lates through the year, with free entry and bookable extras. Check dates on each museum’s website, as they don’t run every week.
London nightlife: clubs and late bars
For serious dancing, Fabric in Farringdon remains one of the most respected clubs in Europe. For something more polished, Mayfair’s members’ clubs such as Annabel’s keep going late, though you’ll need a member to sign you in; our guide to casinos and members’ clubs explains how entry works, and the Leicester Square casinos stay open long after most bars have closed.
Hotel bars are the underrated option. Many keep serving residents and their guests after the pubs have shut, and a good one is calmer than any club. Our guide to luxury hotels in London includes several with excellent bars.
A sample London night
If you’d like a plan to follow, this is one our concierge often suggests. Meet for a drink at seven in a hotel bar or a rooftop. Sit down to dinner at eight in Soho or Covent Garden, somewhere you’ve booked. At half past ten, walk to Ronnie Scott’s for the late set, or to the Comedy Store if you’d rather laugh. Around midnight, finish with an espresso at Bar Italia or a nightcap in your hotel bar. Nothing in that evening needs a taxi until the very end, which is half the pleasure.
On a Sunday or Monday, when some venues are quieter or closed, swap the jazz for a late film, a hotel bar or a long dinner. The city is calmer at the start of the week, and the best tables are easier to come by.
London at night through the seasons
In summer the city stays light until well after nine, and terraces, rooftops and riverside walks come into their own; book outdoor tables early, as they’re the first to go. In winter the evenings start sooner and feel cosier: candlelit restaurants, hotel bars with fires, and in the weeks before Christmas the lights strung across Regent Street and the streets around Covent Garden. Whatever the month, the West End never really sleeps on a Friday or Saturday.
Getting home
The Night Tube runs on Friday and Saturday nights on several lines, and night buses cover the rest of the week. Black cabs can be hailed on the street when their yellow light is on, and ride-hailing apps work everywhere. If you’ve a long evening planned, book a car in advance for the end of the night and agree a pick-up point away from the crowds.
An evening with an escort
Many of our clients’ favourite evenings in London are spent with a companion: dinner, a show or jazz, and a nightcap. A dinner date usually runs for about three hours, and our guide to dinner dates and overnights explains how it works. For tonight, see escorts available today, many of whom are based within easy reach of the West End, including around Tottenham Court Road and Marylebone. Then call or WhatsApp us with the time and place.
A note from the concierge: venues change their menus, rooms, hours and house rules more often than guides can keep up with, so please check directly with the venue before you go.
