The escort meaning, in short: an escort is someone paid for their time and escortship. A client might book her for dinner, an evening at a hotel, a social occasion or a trip away, and the fee covers her time rather than any particular activity. Most escorts are women, though men and trans escorts work too.
That’s the dictionary answer. People asking “what is an escort” usually want a little more: what a booking actually looks like, how agencies differ from independents and where the law stands. This guide covers each of those plainly.
Escort meaning: where the word comes from
“Escort” came into English from the French escorte, which in turn comes from the Italian scorta, a guard or someone who accompanies. It keeps that everyday sense: a police escort, a ship’s escort, a waiter who escorts you to your table. The escortship meaning grew from the same idea, a person who accompanies someone to dinner, a party or a hotel.
So when someone searches “whats an escort”, they nearly always mean the second sense: a professional companion who is paid for her time.
What is a female escort?
A female escort is a woman who offers paid companionship to adult clients. She sets her own hours, chooses which bookings to accept and decides what she is comfortable with. Some prefer quiet evenings in; others love being taken out to a good restaurant. Personalities vary as much as anyone’s, which is why profiles matter.
At Indian Angels the ladies are Asian, Indian and international, around 110 of them, mostly based in central and west London. You can browse them all on our escorts page or by background, for example Indian escorts in London. Every one is 18 or over, with photo ID checked privately and never published.
What does an escort do?
What an escort does depends on what the client books. The usual types of booking are:
- Incall: you visit her at her private apartment, in areas such as Earl’s Court, Bayswater or Marylebone.
- Outcall and hotel visits: she comes to you. Hotel outcalls are the most common booking we arrange; our guide to hotel escort bookings in London explains how they work.
- Dinner dates: around three hours, starting with a meal out.
- Overnights: about eight hours together. Both are covered in dinner dates and overnights.
- Travel companionship: she joins you on a trip, arranged well in advance.
- Duos: two ladies booked together, only in pairings they have agreed to. See duo escorts.
Within a booking, the mood might be an affectionate girlfriend experience (GFE), a massage, conversation over a bottle of wine or simply an evening of good company. Profiles describe each lady’s preferences in shorthand, and our A to Z of escort terms decodes it.
The important point is what an escort is paid for: her time. Anything else that happens is a private matter between two consenting adults, and she can say no to anything.
Agency escorts vs independent escorts
An independent escort runs everything herself: her adverts, her phone, her diary and her own screening of clients. Some clients like dealing with one person directly. The trade-off is that you have to judge for yourself whether the photos are genuine and who you are really talking to.
An escort agency sits between the two of you. It presents the profiles, handles enquiries and arranges the booking, so the escort can concentrate on the client rather than the admin. A good agency also takes on the checking. At Indian Angels every escort is met in person and her photos are checked against her. If the lady who arrives isn’t the lady on the page, you don’t pay.
That matters more than it might seem. Fake photos and deposit scams are common online, and our guide to fake escort profiles and scams shows what to watch for.
What an escort is not
An escort isn’t someone who can be told what to do. She is a self-employed adult who decides whom she sees, where she works and for how long, and she can pause or stop whenever she likes. Nobody works for us under pressure or control, and we act on every concern raised with us.
Nor is an escort agency selling anything other than time. We introduce clients to escorts and arrange the booking. What two adults choose to do in private is up to them, and the escort’s word on it is final.
How booking an escort works
- Choose a lady, or ask the concierge for a suggestion based on area, time and taste.
- Call +44 20 7846 3480, WhatsApp +44 7502 952167, or use the booking page.
- Tell us who, where (the area or hotel), when and for how long.
- We confirm she is free, usually within 15 minutes.
- Pay her at the start of the booking, usually in cash. There is no booking fee.
As a rough guide, one hour incall starts from £200, with most around £300, and an hour’s outcall is usually £300 to £350. Escort prices in London breaks it down further, and how to book an escort walks through the process step by step.
Is it legal to hire an escort in the UK?
In England and Wales, paying an adult for time and escortship is legal, and exchanging sexual services for money between consenting adults in private is not itself illegal. Many related activities are offences, though, including soliciting in public, kerb crawling, keeping a brothel and controlling someone’s sex work for gain.
Since 2010 it has also been a strict liability offence to pay for sexual services from someone subjected to force, threats or deception. Not knowing is no defence, which is one more reason to choose an agency that checks its escorts properly. Northern Ireland made paying for sex illegal in 2015, and Scotland has its own laws. This is general information, not legal advice; is escorting legal in the UK goes into more detail.

Not exactly. An escort is booked for time and escortship, often including dinners, events or travel. What happens privately between two consenting adults is their own matter, but the booking itself is for her time.
